After five years of incubation at Tides Foundation, management of the Syringe Access Fund has transitioned to the National AIDS Fund. The Syringe Access Fund remains an active collaborative grantmaking effort of multiple funders, including the Irene Diamond Fund, the Elton John AIDS Foundation, and the National AIDS Fund.

The Syringe Access Fund was designed to decrease the transmission of HIV/AIDS among injection drug users, their partners, and their children by increasing access to sterile syringes. This innovative partnership was created in 2003 in response to the fatal connection between injection drug use and HIV/AIDS transmission, particularly in communities of color and among low-income women.

Questions regarding future grant opportunities should be directed to the National AIDS Fund at 202.408.4848 x203 or saf(at)aidsfund.org.  A request for proposals (RFP) for the next round of funding will be released by the National AIDS Fund in September 2009.  Organizations that received Syringe Access Fund communications previously will automatically receive the RFP directly via email. The announcement will also be posted on NAF’s website at www.aidsfund.org.

Tides Foundation is currently working on a report that details the first five years of the Syringe Access Fund, including lessons learned.  This report should be available for download in October 2009.
