Tens of thousands have died since the US led invasion of Iraq in March 2003. Today, there is no end in sight to a war that has become a growing cause of unrest in the Middle East.
At this critical time it is crucial for peace supporters to articulate a credible policy proposal for a responsible and prompt exit from Iraq. Strategies for ending the war need more coverage in mainstream media in order to reach the hearts of the public. Local organizing and public mobilization are key to increasing visibility of public opposition to the war. All this work needs financial support.
The Iraq Peace Fund was first created in 2002 to support urgent efforts to prevent the U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq. This funding collaborative quickly attracted almost $500,000 which was distributed among 35 organizations working to prevent and stop the war against Iraq. It proved to be an effective funding mechanism for delivering emergency support to spontaneous initiatives born out of a crisis situation.
As the war continues into a fourth year and public opposition against the war increases, legislative initiatives, educational efforts, media and advertising campaigns are all underway. However, as we have learned in the past 3 years, these anti-war efforts face formidable political challenges.
Tides Foundation will continue to support the efforts of the peace movement through the Iraq Peace Fund (IPF). The Tides Iraq Peace Fund seeks to pool resources to support these initiatives to put pressure on our government to end this costly and tragic war.
Please join us in continuing to support the efforts to stop the war in Iraq. For more information about how to support this effort, please contact Tides Foundation Philanthropic Advisor Ruth Bender at 415.561.6347 or rbender(at)tides.org.
