In order to achieve social and economic justice in this country, women and girls need quality, affordable health care; the right to bear and parent children; access to safe and legal abortions; a commitment to end domestic violence; and the removal of environmental health threats, just to name a few critical issues. The Tides Reproductive Justice Fund (RJF) addresses these issues head-on.
Focusing on reproductive justice, we are supporting a wide spectrum of women to build a grassroots movement that resonates with the public and has the power to win real victories at the local, state, and federal levels. The Fund helps build this practical strength by supporting efforts to engage underrepresented women specifically including women of color, low-income, young, rural, immigrant, LGBT, and incarcerated women.
Individual donors who are passionate about the reproductive freedom of women and girls formed the Tides Reproductive Justice Fund four years ago. Their vision inspired others to join them in this funding collaborative, which now includes individual and institutional donors.
Underlying this work is the fact that women's rights need to become a more integral part of the progressive movement. By funding organizations that are actively building bridges between reproductive justice and other social justice work the reproductive health impact of environmental pollution, for example the Reproductive Justice Fund is working to pull women's issues out from the margins and into the center of national politics.
Since 2003, the RJF has granted over $2.7 million to 45 organizations. In 2006, the RJF made a total of $801,985 in grants to 24 reproductive justice organizations in 12 states and the District of Columbia.
