The Moloka`i Environmental Protection Fund

What Is The MEPF?

The Moloka’i Environmental Protection Fund (MEPF) of Tides Foundation was established to protect Moloka’i’s environment and to enhance the community’s ability to achieve such protection through environmental advocacy and by accessing legal services.

Who Can Apply?

To qualify for a grant from the MEPF of Tides Foundation, the grant applicant must be a non-profit organization or be fiscally sponsored by a non-profit organization.

Examples of Work That Would Be Considered for Funding:

  • Educational outreach
  • Reforestation
  • Sustainable/diversified agriculture
  • Native plant and species propagation
  • Environmental studies
  • Sustainable economic development

Grant Amounts

Grants from the MEPF will range from $1,000 to $5,000.

Open Proposal Process

Proposals for the 2008 MEPF Grants Cycle will be collected on a continual basis.

Grant Requests: General Support or Project Specific

The Moloka`i Environmental Protection Fund (MEPF) funds organizations that:

  • protect Moloka`i’s environment, particularly its ocean, land, and water resources through restoration, pollution prevention and reduction projects;
  • enhance the Moloka`i community’s ability to achieve such protection through environmental advocacy, education, and access to legal services.

YOUR PROPOSAL MATERIALS SHOULD INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION:
    
I.    Completed Organizational Summary Sheet (click here for the organizational summary sheet)

II.    A short narrative, describing the work of your organization, including:

  1. Mission statement.
  2. Amount requested, and the period of time for which the grant is requested.
  3. Needs statement: Why your agency is requesting this grant; what are the problems being addressed by your organization?  Who will benefit from your work?  How will you spend the funds if a grant is made?
  4. Description of the work you are planning to undertake: Include goals, strategies you will employ, action steps, time frame, and expected results.  What outcomes do you hope to achieve?
  5. The constituency that your agency serves, including geographic location, socio-economic status, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, physical ability and language.
  6. Your organization's relationships with other organizations working to meet the same goals.
  7. The names and qualifications of the individuals in your organization.
  8. An evaluation section that explains how you will measure the effectiveness of your activities, and states your criteria for a successful program and your expected results.

III.    Additional Materials:

  1. Your organization’s 2006 operating budget.  If you are applying for funding for a specific project, please provide a current project budget as well.
  2. A copy of your organization’s 501(c)(3) non-profit status letter from the IRS, which states that you are a tax-exempt organization.  If you are not a tax-exempt organization, please provide a letter from your fiscal sponsor, which explains their relationship to your organization, as well as a copy of your fiscal sponsor’s 501(c)(3) letter.  (Please note that we cannot issue a grant without this document on file in our office.)  
  3. If you are a current grantee of the MEPF, please also submit a progress report on the last grant you received.  The report should be a brief two-page narrative and include: how the grant was used and how it made a difference in the overall efforts of your organization; any major staff change; any additional challenges that your organization faces.
